MARCH QTR KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES

  • In March quarter 2005, the trend estimate for the number of cattle slaughtered remained steady at 2.0 million.
  • The trend estimate for the number of calves slaughtered in March quarter 2005 fell by 4% to 208,000. This was the lowest trend estimate since the series began in September quarter 1979.
  • In March quarter 2005, the trend estimate for the number of lambs slaughtered rose by 3% to 4.3 million. This was the highest quarterly trend estimate since March quarter 2002.
  • The trend estimate for the number of pigs slaughtered remained steady at 1.3 million.

LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTERED: Trend


CATTLE (EXCLUDING CALVES)

The trend estimate for the number of cattle slaughtered in March quarter 2005 remained steady at 2.0 million.

CALVES

The trend estimate for the number of calves slaughtered in March quarter 2005 fell by 4% to 208,000. This was the lowest estimate since the series began in September quarter 1979.

SHEEP AND LAMBS

In March quarter 2005, the trend estimate for the number of sheep slaughtered remained steady at 2.7 million. The number of lambs slaughtered rose by 3% to 4.3 million.

PIGS

In March quarter 2005, the trend estimate for the number of pigs slaughtered remained steady at 1.3 million.

MEAT PRODUCTION: Trend


BEEF

In March quarter 2005, the trend estimate for beef production increased slightly to 530,000 tonnes.

MUTTON AND LAMB

In March quarter 2005, the trend estimate for mutton production remained steady at 57,300 tonnes, while the estimate for lamb production rose by 3% to 88,200 tonnes.

TOTAL RED MEAT

The trend estimate for red meat production increased slightly to 779,000 tonnes in March quarter 2005, due mainly to small increases in beef and lamb production for the quarter.

CHICKEN MEAT

The trend estimate for chicken meat production in March quarter 2005 remained steady at 184,000 tonnes.

WHOLE MILK INTAKE BY FACTORIES

The trend estimate for whole milk intake by factories in December quarter 2004 fell slightly to 2.5 billion litres.

BROKERS AND DEALERS RECEIVALS OF TAXABLE WOOL

The trend estimate for wool receivals by brokers and dealers in March quarter 2005 fell slightly to 116,000 tonnes.

LIVESTOCK EXPORTS: Original


EXPORTS OF LIVE SHEEP

Live sheep exports rose by 8% to 910,000 in March quarter 2005. Unit value fell by 5% for the quarter (down to $61.26), however the increase in numbers exported saw the gross value of live sheep exports increase to $55.7 million.

EXPORTS OF LIVE CATTLE

In March quarter 2005, live cattle exports fell by 9% to 119,000. This, combined with a 12% drop in unit value (down to $642.28), saw the gross value of live cattle exports fall to $76.3 million.
